May 30, 2021

A pedestrian was airlifted to an area trauma center after he was struck by a car while working on a church sign in West End on Sunday. The accident occurred on Highway 211 by the intersection of Highway 73 around 3:30 p.m.

The man was working on a sign for West End United Methodist Church that was beside the road at the time of the accident. The sign was a mobile-style that could be pulled behind a vehicle.

As the man was working on the sign, an SUV ran off the side of the road and struck him before coming to a stop in a clearing. The SUV also struck the man’s car.

West End Fire & Rescue and Moore County EMS arrived on the scene and determined the man needed to be airlifted to a trauma center.

A landing zone was set up in a field beside the West End Fire & Rescue building. EMS transported the patient to the landing zone and met the helicopter from UNC Hospitals. The man’s condition is unknown at this time but is believed to be stable.

The female occupant of the SUV was transported to Firsthealth Moore Regional with injuries that are not considered life-threatening.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol is investigating the exact cause of the accident.
